Every shower we install comes with a lifetime guarantee against leaks. We use a 20 mil waterproof fabric with an integrated drain. This system is also vapor proof and an excellent application for steam showers and high volume wet areas. It is the perfect solution for curved surfaces, shower benches and niches. Corners are usually the first places leaks develop. By using the membrane, we eliminate that possibility.
The photograph shows the grey cement board as traditionally installed. We like it for its strength to thickness ratio, but it’s not necessary when we use the orange fabric. This photograph shows the orange colored waterproof membrane applied over cement board. The tiles are applied directly over the membrane. This way, every drop of water that hits the surface of the tile goes down the drain.
In a typical vinyl liner installation, there is a bed of sloped cement on top of the waterproof layer. This slope directs most of the water down the drain, but some often gets caught in the cement later below the tile, and above the vinyl liner. This water can set and collect for years until leaks occur. A span of 6 or 7 years before leaks are evident is not uncommon. About 1/3 of our work is correcting improper installations.
